The Frederick Salsa Meetup Group is a community of Salsa and Latin music lovers that comes together to enjoy each others company and share in their addiction that is Salsa and Latin dancing. The purpose is to provide a venue in Frederick where people who love to dance Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and other latin music can go to dance and have fun.
Join us for fun filled events exclusive to Frederick Salsa members. Here are a few frequently asked questions:
1.) Do I HAVE to join the group to come to one of your events?
No. The events are open to the public and everyone is welcome! The benefits of group membership are reduced prices for admission, access to member only events, and notice of when events will take place.
2.) How much does it cost to join the group?
Nothing. There is no membership fee to join the group but there is a price of admission to our events. The admission will vary depending on the event.
3.) If I'm not a member how will I know when you're next event is?
The only way to find out is to either join and select to receive our e-mail annoucements or be friends with a member who can tell you about our events. We're also on Facebook under the name Frederick Salsa.
4.) What type of shoes should I wear?
Wear shoes that don't have rubber soles. This goes for both gentlemen and ladies. Rubber soles may prohibit you from properly executing a turn or a spin. You also don't want to wear bulky shoes such as boots, unless you feel comfortable dancing in them. As long as they don't have rubber soles and you feel that they don't prevent you from spinning or turning properly then they should be alright. If all of your shoes have rubber soles a trick you can use is to put masking tape on the sole right where the ball of your foot is. No athletic shoes please.
5.) Dress Code?
Well, Salsa is a classy and elegant style of music. Take this opportunity to dress to impress. Don't dress as if you're going to a ball but don't wear your workout clothes either. A collared shirt for gentlemen with nice jeans or slacks is nice. For ladies, the options are endless. Comfort is also a factor. Wear clothes that don't constrict your movements or clothes you feel uncomfortable in. When dancing to Latin music there are lots of movements so you want to be able to move freely.
6.) Are the dance lessons formal?
No. The dance lessons are informal and cover the very basics. For more formal ballroom style lessons we can point you in the right direction and refer ballroom style instructors. Salsa, as with anything else, is built on basics. People who are phenomenal dancers are phenomenal because they've mastered the basics. The lessons taught allow new comers to start dancing and having fun as soon as possible! Formal dance instruction is highly recommended if you'd like to excel in Salsa dancing!
7.) Do I need a partner?
No. A partner is not necessary. We have many people who show up without partners. People come out to dance and have a good time. Even couples who show up end up dancing with different people. This is part of what dancing is all about and how one gets better because they dance with other people of varying levels of experience. Sometimes we have more ladies than gentlemen and vice versa.
8.) Who can I contact for more information?
You may contact Aaron Ferrufino at (240) 423-3463. You may also e-mail Aaron at fredericksalsa@hotmail.com.
If you're not signed up to receive e-mails be sure to check the calendar on a frequent basis for event dates and times. Feel free to invite anyone and everyone interested in Salsa and Latin dancing to attend. The more the merrier! Hope to see you soon!
